1. Going to the movies is a
favorite American past-time that offers
something more than merely just renting
DVD's and Videos can. But did you know
that you can go to the movies for cheaper
just by going earlier in the day. Day
time and early evening matinees are
always cheaper then movies that begin
from 7 to 9:30 pm.
2. And of course, just
renting movies is always cheaper. To make
it more entertaining and fun, you should
invite friends over to share and enrich
in the experience. Besides, you may have
notice that movie theater ticket prices
keep rising, yet movie rental prices keep
dropping - why is that?
3. The Entertainment
section of your newspaper, or free
entertainment newspapers are you #1 guide
to what's going on in your community and
they are always full of cheap or free
places to go and things to do.
4. Don't ever
underestimate your library. If your not a
reader, you should become one. Reading
books, learning new things and growing
your imagination is one of the most
oldest and purest forms of entertainment.
Many libraries will also rent videos (of
all types) and audio books that you can
listen to while you are making that dull
drive back and forth from work. There's
an old Chinese saying that sums up the
value of books in the best way: Whatever
you put inside your head, nobody can ever
take away.
5. Ever notice how Cable
companies manipulate their price plans?
The basic cable is always under $20, but
the next level (where all the good
channels are) cost $50, $60 or more. They
purposely leave the basic level so
inadequate that you are left with no
choice but to pay more - but only if you
play their game. You can save yourself
$30 to $50 a month by telling them you
aren't buying into this garbage.
Americans today have become too
hypnotized by their TV shows which always
lowers the richness of their lives. Can
you remember anything you watched on TV
last week? I can't. Yet, you can probably
remember more about the last book you
read, nature walk you took or visit's to
a friend house. Dump that 150 channel
cable plan, save your money for youself,
and enrich your life by getting off that
couch.
6. Movie rental business
have their busy days (Thursday through
Sunday) and slow days (Monday through
Wednesday). On those slow days, you can
usually rent movies for much less and
probably find the popular ones you can't
get on Friday night at 7 p.m.
7. If you are planning a
family vacation to Grandma's house, try
to keep a few things in mind. Pack
lunches and drinks so you don't have to
pay highway robbery prices at convenience
stores. Forget about taking the fancy car
SUV that will impress your family
members, take the one that get's the best
mileage. Check the fan belts, oil, water
and fluid levels before you leave and
keep those tires full of air so you can
get better mileage.
8. Don't ever buy new
books. New books can cost a fortune
compared to used book prices. I've
personally saved $1,000s over the last 3
years by shopping at ebay owned half.com.
Large online bookseller Amazon.com also
offers used books for a fraction of the
cost.
9. Keep in mind that
buying your airline ticket 21 days in
advance can always save you money. So can
travelling on certain days of the week.
In my experience, online ticket brokers
such as cheaptickets.com can save you
money sometimes, but sometimes a travel
agent can get the best deal. Make sure
you check with both and do your homework
well before buying any airfare.
10. You and your spouse
should make a list of at least 10 things
the family can do together that is free
or near to free as can be. Whether it's
going to the park, fishing off the bank
with homemade bait, or working together
in dad's shop - you should always have a
list of fun things that the family can do
together that doesn't cost a cent.
